Story
GracePoint is a demonstration of the power of God and His desire to reach people in Wichita and surrounding areas. In June of 2002, Pastor Bryson and Susan Butts began dreaming about a new kind of church in Wichita that would reach the un-churched and de-churched thousands. They spent the year traveling across America meeting with the leaders of large churches and learning new ways of reaching people for Christ in the 21st century.
Passionate about fulfilling the vision of reaching the community through a relevant message with methods that would connect with today’s culture, they formed a core group of 21 people that initially met in the living room of their home. From the very beginning, Bryson cast the vision that GracePoint would reach the un-churched thousands in Wichita and surrounding areas.
GracePoint began through an affiliation with the Kansas West Conference of the United Methodist Church.
After several months of reaching out to the community through block parties and other events, the fledgling church started having Sunday worship in the Butts’ basement. Committed to reaching more people for Christ, GracePoint committed the majority of their resources to sending out direct mail pieces to over 35,000 homes in the Wichita area which invited them to GracePoint’s first worship experience on January 25th, 2004. The service was held at the Sedgwick County Zoo and over 350 people attended!
GracePoint continued to grow over the next 17 months to over 400 people a week, with a majority of those not knowing Christ previously. Today, GracePoint averages over 600 in attendance every Sunday. Hundreds of people have become committed Christ followers and are passionate about sharing their testimonies of Life Change.
In every step of its short, four year life as a church, GracePoint has seen God work in extraordinary ways. The dream has become a vibrant, healthy church that is focused on reaching, teaching and unleashing fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ into Wichita and the surrounding areas. GracePoint is in the process of building it’s first permanent facility on 23 acres across from the North West YMCA. This GracePoint Campus is scheduled to open in 2010.
GracePoint will always have as a part of it’s vision the desire to be portable. As the first permanent location is being built, GracePoint will start another portable site in NE Wichita. This will be just the second of many locations as GracePoint reaches out in a multi-site model.
Lives are being changed and God’s vision has become a reality.
